SUE ELLEN JACOBS
Handweaver of Tribal Wraps
My Tribal Wraps are handwoven shawls and scarves that have been influenced by the indigenous textiles I have collected from Latin America, Turkey, India and Pakistan, as well as from my travels in Mexico and Peru. The pattern-work on my pieces speaks to the geometric forms that can be seen on many pre-Columbian ruins, such as the architectural friezes of Mitla, the irrigated terraces of Macchu Pichu or the pyramidal construction at Monte Alban.
After having spent the last five years weaving in Mexico, I can say without a doubt that Mexico taught me more about color than I could have ever imagined, and this experience is reflected in my work.
I have recently returned to the spectacular high desert of New Mexico and have set up my studio just north of Albuquerque, while my husband and I build a house on our land near the Zuni Reservation in western New Mexico.
